Eagles Split Conference Opener at Bossier Parish
BOSSIER CITY — Northeast Texas Community College opened NJCAA Region 14 North Conference play Saturday with a split on the road against Bossier Parish Community College, earning a 3-1 victory in Game 1 before falling 6-4 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Northeast Texas 3, Bossier Parish 1
The Eagles leaned on dominant pitching and one big swing to secure the opener.
In the second inning, David Sorg provided all the offense Northeast Texas would need, launching a three-run home run that plated Carson Umphres and Josh Staten for a 3-0 lead.
From there, the pitching staff took control.
Tanner Webb earned the win with 5.1 strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven. Webb worked around three walks and kept Bossier Parish off balance throughout his outing.
The Cavaliers trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the sixth, but Bryson Bentley shut the door. Bentley tossed 1.2 hitless innings to earn the save and preserve the conference-opening win.
The Eagles capitalized on timely hitting and clean defense, including a key double play turned by Cameron Reiter, Sorg, and Jonathon Kent.
Game 2: Bossier Parish 6, Northeast Texas 4
Northeast Texas appeared poised for a sweep after breaking through for four runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap.
Josh Staten scored on a wild pitch to open the scoring, followed by an RBI single from Kaleb Steiger. Drew Flores then delivered a run-scoring triple, and Mason Pate added an RBI groundout to give the Eagles a 4-0 advantage.
Starter Cooper Schwank was sharp early, striking out seven over six innings. However, Bossier Parish rallied for three runs in the sixth — to cut the lead to 4-3.
The momentum shifted in the seventh as the Cavaliers pushed across three more runs on timely hits, taking a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish.
Northeast Texas managed four hits in the game, with Steiger and Flores driving in runs and Jonathon Kent adding a hit and a run scored. The Eagles also applied pressure on the bases with four stolen bases.
The split opens conference play with Northeast Texas earning an early road win while showing flashes offensively in Game 2. The Eagles will look to build consistency as Region 14 North play continues.
