Eagles Outslug No. 16 Cowley County, Claim Series Win at Eagle Field
MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas — Northeast Texas Community College capped a thrilling series Friday afternoon with an 18–15 victory over No. 16-ranked Cowley County Community College, securing a 2–1 series win against the nationally ranked Tigers at Eagle Field.
Cowley County jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning, but the Eagles answered immediately with four runs in the bottom half. From there, the contest turned into a back-and-forth slugfest, featuring momentum swings and explosive offense from both sides.
Northeast Texas delivered its biggest inning in the third, erupting for six runs to seize control of the game. Luke Nohinek highlighted the frame with a grand slam, finishing the day 2-for-6 with six RBIs. Nohinek's performance anchored an offense that consistently applied pressure throughout the afternoon.
The Eagles continued to add runs behind patient at-bats, drawing 11 walks and capitalizing on key situations. Boston Seahorn went 3-for-4 and scored three times, Jake Farris added three runs scored and two RBIs, and Cameron Reiter drove in three runs. Kaleb Steiger also homered as part of the Eagles' 11-hit effort.
Cowley County stayed within striking distance using the long ball, finishing with four home runs and 17 hits. Holden Groebl drove in four runs, while Skyler Branam added a three-run home run to lead the Tigers offensively.
On the mound, Carson Umphres earned the win in relief, tossing two innings and allowing just one run to steady the game during the middle innings. Northeast Texas utilized its pitching depth throughout the contest to navigate a high-scoring affair that featured 15 combined pitchers.
The win sealed a series victory over the No. 16 team in the NJCAA, giving Northeast Texas a marquee early-season accomplishment and improving the Eagles to 2-2 on the year.
Northeast Texas will return to action on February 11, traveling to face No. 7-ranked Weatherford College at Eagle Field in another matchup against a nationally ranked opponent.
