The Northeast Texas Community College Eagles swept their conference doubleheader against Tyler Junior College at Eagle Field, earning two gritty victories, 3–1 and 3–2.
Game One: Eagles Ride Kuhn's Strong Start to 3–1 Win
Tyler struck first in the opener when Micah Roberts delivered a sacrifice fly in the first inning to plate David Lillis for a 1–0 lead. From there, Eagles starter Kaleb Kuhn settled into a dominant rhythm, silencing the Apache offense.
NTCC evened the score in the fourth inning when Carson Umphres doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by David Sorg. The Eagles took control in the fifth. Jake Farris reached base and came around to score on an RBI single by Jonathon Kent, giving NTCC its first lead of the day. BJ Lumkins followed with another RBI single to extend the advantage to 3–1.
Kuhn earned the win with an impressive outing, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven across six innings. Lane Cole closed the door in the seventh, retiring the side in order to record the save.
Offensively, Umphres led the Eagles with two hits, including a double, while Kent and Lumkins each drove in a run as NTCC totaled six hits.
Game Two: Late Rally Lifts NTCC to Sweep
The nightcap proved even tighter. The Eagles grabbed a 1–0 lead in the first inning when Jonathon Kent scored on an error despite no hits in the frame.
NTCC pitching kept Tyler off the board through six innings. Starter Chris Whitaker struck out six over four scoreless innings, and the bullpen navigated traffic to maintain the slim lead.
Tyler finally broke through in the seventh, using patience at the plate to draw multiple walks. Ben Coke forced in the tying run with a bases-loaded walk, and James Raecek added a sacrifice fly to give the Apaches a 2–1 advantage.
The Eagles responded immediately. Jake Farris reached base and scored on an RBI single from BJ Lumkins to tie the game. With the bases loaded later in the inning, David Sorg was hit by a pitch, forcing home Kent with what proved to be the winning run.
Sam Durard shut down Tyler over the final three innings to earn the victory, allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Lumkins, Sorg, and Carson Umphres each recorded RBIs, while Boston Seahorn and Riley Patterson contributed doubles. Kent scored twice, including the decisive run in the seventh.
Complete Team Effort
Across both games, the Eagles relied on outstanding pitching, timely hitting, and clutch situational play to secure the sweep. NTCC pitchers combined to hold Tyler to just three total runs on nine hits while striking out 18 batters on the day.
